Recent data from Statistics Canada reveals a concerning trend: international students are more likely to live in unsuitable housing conditions than Canadian-born students. Of the ten Canadian cities with the highest number of international students, 25 to 63 percent live in unsuitable conditions. Since many students can't work full-time while studying, finding affordable, safe, and accessible housing in places like Vancouver is a real challenge.
For those who do manage to secure housing, the challenges continue. Many students have to compromise on their living conditions, often sharing cramped spaces with multiple roommates and enduring long commutes to campus.
At Columbia College, student success extends beyond the classroom. A stable and comfortable living environment is crucial for academic and personal well-being. That's why, in July 2024, Columbia College partnered with GEC Living to offer affordable off-campus accommodations for our students. Located just 25 minutes from our campus, these dorm-style apartments will be available to our current and incoming students starting September 2024.
As a non-profit institution, we are committed to keeping these housing options affordable and at a lower market rate. A private room will cost $965 per month, while a shared room is available for just $725 per month. The housing features shared spaces, including a kitchen, bathroom, rooftop patio, and social lounge, fostering a sense of community among students.
We recognize that transitioning to post-secondary in a new country comes with challenges. We aim to ease some of the burden by providing affordable, safe, and supportive housing options. We hope this initiative will help reduce some of our students' stress, allowing them to focus on their studies and fully embrace their experience at Columbia College.
