World Mental Health Day: Supporting International Students at Columbia College

mental-health-1

Every year, on October 10th, the global community observes World Mental Health Day. This day serves as an important reminder to prioritize mental health, break down stigmas, and create open spaces for conversations about well-being. This year’s theme, set by the World Federation for Mental Health, shines a spotlight on workplace mental health, reminding us that mental health is not just personal—it’s something that impacts all areas of life, including our daily work and study environments.

For international students at Columbia College, adapting to a new country, navigating a new educational system, and managing daily stressors can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why fostering mental wellness, both individually and as a community, is important to the well-being and success of students. Open conversations about mental health can help everyone navigate life’s challenges more effectively, reducing feelings of isolation and stress.

At Columbia College, we are committed to ensuring our students have the resources and support to prioritize their mental health. Whether it’s balancing studies, part-time work, or adjusting to a new culture, here are some practical tips for maintaining your mental wellness:

Tips for Personal Mental Wellness:

  1. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a powerful way to manage stress and stay grounded. Engaging in mindfulness activities like meditation or deep breathing exercises can help you stay focused and reduce feelings of anxiety. Start for one minute each day and see how big of a difference it can make in your daily life.
  1. Stay Active
Physical activity benefits your body and boosts your mental health. Regular exercise helps release endorphins, which are known to improve mood and reduce stress. Whether it’s going for a walk, joining a sports club, or practicing yoga, staying active can ease the pressures of student life.
  2. Seek Help Early
Feeling overwhelmed? It’s okay to ask for help. Reaching out to a mental health professional early on can prevent bigger challenges down the road. At Columbia College, we have counselling services available for students who need support. Don’t hesitate to take that first step.
  1. Build a Support Network
Navigating life as an international student can sometimes feel isolated, but building connections is important. Whether it’s forming friendships with fellow students, joining community groups, or staying connected with family back home, a strong support network helps feel less alone.

Columbia College’s Commitment to Mental Health

Columbia College recognizes international students' unique challenges and is dedicated to supporting student well-being. Through workshops, counselling services, and community-building events, we aim to create a supportive and nurturing environment where every student can thrive.

This World Mental Health Day, let’s commit to raising awareness, supporting one another, and showing that mental health matters. By fostering open conversations and taking proactive steps, we can ensure that students have the tools and resources to successfully navigate their mental health journey.
