Finding a safe, affordable, and community-oriented place to live in Vancouver can be challenging for international students. So, in the summer 2024, we partnered with GEC Living to help our students find a home while studying and living in Vancouver. Two of our students, Ushindi M. and Gurvir K., shared their experiences living in GEC Housing to give you a glimpse into what makes it a great option.
Discovering GEC Living 
For Gurvir, the journey began with Columbia College’s website. “I was researching student accommodation options when I learned about the GEC Living program. The affordability, supportive community, and easy commute caught my attention immediately,” she shared.
Ushindi, on the other hand, discovered GEC through their acceptance email from the college. A quick look at the photos online exceeded their expectations. “It was much more attractive than I expected. The school chose for me, and it turned out to be the best one!”
Convenient Location
Both students agreed that the location of GEC Housing is unbeatable. For Gurvir, the short commute to campus and easy access to grocery stores, cafes, and public transit made life easier. “The dollar store is a minute’s walk away, restaurants are open late at night, and the library and gym are nearby. It’s all so convenient!”
Ushindi highlighted how GEC’s proximity to a bus stop makes getting to Columbia College and UBC seamless. “It helps me catch classes on time, and nearby amenities like Dollarama and T&T superstore give me more time to focus on my studies. And for KFC lovers—it’s right across the street!”
Building Connections and Community

Ushindi praised the nearby park as a perfect spot to meet new friends and connect. “It feels like home because of the strong social network,” they said.
For Gurvir, the social atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming. “I’ve met so many great people in common areas like the lounge and rooftop,” she shared. These spaces encourage interaction and foster lasting friendships.
Modern, Comfortable Living
Both students highlighted GEC Housing’s top-notch facilities. “The facilities are well-maintained and comfortable. I appreciate the modern amenities and the cleanliness of the shared spaces,” Gurvir said. Ushindi echoed these sentiments, describing the accommodations as “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and emphasizing air conditioning, laundry facilities, and stylish furniture.
Shared spaces like the lounge have been valuable for both students. “It’s a great place for group study sessions and spending downtime with friends,” Gurvir noted.
Safety and Support
Feeling secure in your living space is crucial, and both students emphasized GEC Housing’s strong safety measures. “The security cameras and building rules ensure a safe environment. I’ve never had to worry about intruders or theft,” Ushindi shared.
Gurvir added that the staff’s responsiveness makes a big difference. “The staff are incredibly helpful and always available to assist with any issues or questions.”

Living at GEC Housing has positively impacted students’ well-being and academic success. Gurvir appreciates how the supportive environment impacts her sense of community, while Ushindi highlighted how the modern amenities contribute to a comfortable and focused lifestyle.
