As we step into 2025, it’s the perfect time to embrace fresh opportunities and take inspiration from those around us! Meet Prabhu Karki, a 21-year-old student from the scenic city of Pokhara, Nepal. Currently pursuing an Associate of Arts degree in Psychology at Columbia College in Vancouver, Prabhu is a dedicated student, an avid adventurer, and a tea enthusiast. He enjoys hiking and trekking—with his sights set on the Everest Base Camp—reading fiction and sipping on the aromatic delight of cardamom tea.
A Lesson in Adaptation
Starting a new year usually brings challenges, reflection, and growth opportunities. Reflecting on his early days at Columbia College, Prabhu wishes he had known not to overthink or pressure himself. “I thought it would be difficult to adapt to a new and different environment,” he says. However, he soon realized the journey wasn’t as intimidating as he imagined. His advice? Embrace the experience and trust in your ability to adapt and thrive.
Discovering Typing Essentials
Prabhu’s journey with the Typing Essentials Program (TEP) began when he noticed a poster on campus featuring a hand and a keyboard during his first weeks at Columbia College. Intrigued by his interest in typing, he joined the program—a roughly 10-hour course spread over a semester designed to enhance typing speed and accuracy. This decision led him to an unexpected achievement: becoming the reigning Typing Champion for two consecutive semesters. “It feels amazing!” Prabhu shares. “Winning again during the Fall 2024 semester! It motivated me to aim for 100 words per minute next semester!”
The skills Prabhu gained from TEP have significantly impacted his academic and professional life. Improved typing speed and accuracy allow him to complete assignments and projects efficiently. Additionally, the program has boosted his resume and confidence, preparing him for future opportunities.
Embracing Community Connections
Through the Community Connections Program (CCP) at the College, Prabhu found another avenue to grow and give back. He worked with Trinity Grace United Church (TGUC) on their Farm-to-Plate Marketplace initiative, managing farm deliveries, packaging, and community order distribution. At TGUC, he also operated MEVO, handling live-streaming for events such as Sunday services and jazz vespers.
What drew Prabhu to the CCP was his passion for farming and supporting farmers. “The Farm-to-Plate Marketplace gave me a unique opportunity to connect with local farmers,” he shares. “I also loved working remotely on the marketplace website while sitting in a cozy café.” Beyond the technical skills, Prabhu values the sense of spiritual fulfillment and the inspiring individuals he met during the program.
Lessons Learned and Advice to Students
Prabhu’s experiences at Columbia College have exceeded his expectations. He has gained confidence, responsibility, and teamwork skills—all in a supportive and enriching environment. He advises new and returning students looking to try something new this year: “Go for it! These programs will help you grow personally and professionally, giving you memories and skills that last a lifetime.”
Looking Ahead
In five years, Prabhu envisions himself using his knowledge of psychology and technology to create a platform that helps people overcome challenges and improve their lives. Whether it’s providing mental health support or tools for personal growth, his ultimate goal is to make a positive impact. Columbia College has prepared him well, teaching him critical thinking, collaboration, and the confidence to pursue his dreams.
