Scholar Path: Supporting Your Next Chapter

IOHR

Graduation is more than just a milestone—it's a stepping stone to the future. At Columbia College, many students stand at this pivotal moment, ready to transition to university. But the excitement of this new chapter often comes with the challenge of financing education abroad. Columbia College offers scholarships to help our students on this journey, including the Scholar Path Program, which awards up to $30,000 to those who excel academically and demonstrate strong leadership.

We recently caught up with Hamoudi Baratta, a Columbia College alum from Syria who graduated in 2023 with an Associate degree in Computer Science. Hamoudi's journey began in 2014 when he arrived in Canada as part of the first group of 200 Government-Assisted Syrian Refugees.

Q: What inspired you to apply for the Scholar Path Program?

Hamoudi: I saw the Scholar Path Program as more than just a scholarship; it recognized my journey as a former refugee in Canada. It fueled my passion for continuing my education and advocacy work as a Software Systems student and public speaker. This program is a beacon of hope, showing me that perseverance and dedication can make dreams come true.

Q: How did you feel when you learned you were a recipient?

Hamoudi: I was overwhelmed with gratitude. It validated all the hard work and challenges I've faced. This award is more than financial support—it symbolizes hope and motivation to keep pushing forward.

Q: How did receiving the scholarship impact your transition to university?

Hamoudi: The scholarship was a lifeline. It eased the financial burden of tuition, allowing me to focus on my studies and care for my daughter, who has a rare genetic disorder. This support has been crucial in balancing my academic and personal life.

Q: Can you share a project you're proud of from your application?

Hamoudi: I'm incredibly proud of my work as a refugee resettlement counsellor and youth worker with ISSofBC, the NGO that supported me when I first arrived in Canada. This role allowed me to give back to the community and help other refugees on their journeys, embodying compassion and service.

Q: What leadership experiences at Columbia College do you still use today?

Hamoudi: I gained leadership experience at Columbia College through initiatives supporting refugees. These experiences shaped me into a leader committed to making a positive impact.

Q: How did Columbia College and the Scholar Path Program prepare you for university?

Hamoudi: Columbia College and the Scholar Path Program significantly prepared me. They provided a supportive environment and resources that helped me excel academically and personally. The leadership skills and community involvement opportunities were crucial to my development.

Q: What advice do you have for future Scholar Path Program applicants?

Hamoudi: Stay resilient and focused on your goals. Your unique experiences and challenges are your strengths. Use them to drive your passion and success. Remember, every challenge you overcome brings you closer to your dreams.

The Scholar Path Program is more than just financial aid; it celebrates our students' hard work, leadership, and community commitment. It's available to students and alumni who have completed at least 30 transfer credits at Columbia College and are ready to pursue a Bachelor's degree at a Canadian university. Whether you're a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or international student, the Scholar Path Program supports your academic journey.

The Evaluation Rubric: A Roadmap to Success

Applicants are evaluated in three key areas: Academic Excellence, Leadership Experience, and Community Involvement. Each category is scored from 0 to 5, with specific criteria guiding the assessment:

  • Community Involvement: How deep was your involvement? What impact did you make? The Committee looks for meaningful, sustained contributions.
  • Leadership: Have you held formal leadership roles or initiated projects that benefited others? Leadership is about driving change and inspiring others, not just titles.
  • Academic Excellence: How well do you communicate your passion for your field? How will this scholarship support your intellectual growth? The quality of your application is as important as your past achievements.

For many, the Scholar Path Program has meant more than financial relief. It has affirmed their hard work, leadership, and community commitment. With up to $30,000 to support their first year of studies, students can focus on their education without the stress of financial worries.

Many recipients thrive at top universities like Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia, continuing to lead, inspire, and give back. The Scholar Path Program doesn't just help students transition to university; it empowers them to continue their journey and to Find Their Voice.

Every year, the Scholar Path Program opens doors for students. It's a journey that begins at Columbia College and extends far beyond into the halls of Canadian universities and the broader world. If you're ready to take the next step in your academic journey, the Scholar Path Program is here to help you write your story.  What will your story be?
