For Sucess Beyond the Classroom
Hi everyone, my name is Navita! I am entering my second year of general science studies at Columbia College! I am thrilled to share with you something that has impacted my academic journey and helped improve my confidence in entering the workforce in Canada: LinkedIn Learning!
Did you know? Columbia College students can have free access to LinkedIn Learning! Even after graduation, you can continue to use the platform with one year of free alumni access.
The Big Discovery
I discovered LinkedIn Learning during my first day at Columbia College during the student orientation. I was surprised to learn that Columbia College offers this incredible resource to students. Although I was aware of LinkedIn Learning, I had no idea it was free for me as a Columbia College student—which is amazing! It made me feel that our college values our success beyond the classrooms.
The Initial Step - A Resource for Success
I signed up for LinkedIn Learning in my first semester, and it's been a game-changer!
LinkedIn Learning is an online platform with over 17,400 courses across various fields, including business, technology, and creativity. The world-class experts teach the courses, sharing valuable insights, hands-on experiences, and knowledge. Whether you want to learn a new skill or refresh an old one, there’s something for everyone!
Delving Deeper - Personalized Learning to Fit Your Goals
After registering, you take a short survey about the skills you are interested in building. (I will admit, it can be hard as there’s so much to choose from!) The survey helps the platform curate recommendations and provide a personalized experience to the users.
You can filter your search based on your time and specific learning goals. I highly recommend downloading the LinkedIn Learning mobile app, which has taken convenience to the next level! Some courses are as short as 30-45 minutes so that you can complete a course during your daily commute to campus! Talk about maximizing your learning with minimal time investment.
Courses that Changed My Game - Why Should You Try Them?
I used LinkedIn Learning to build skills like communication, time management, and digital literacy—areas I've always wanted to improve. Here are a few courses I completed:
- MASTERING TIME MANAGEMENT: “Time Management Fundamentals,” This self-help course helped me grasp the significance of managing my time effectively. As a student, I learned many tips to help manage my time and meet my deadlines. The significant tools I learned are mind-clearing schedules and organizing my calendar. Applying what I learned in my daily life significantly improved my productivity and reduced my stress.
- BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN PUBLIC SPEAKING: Public speaking has always been a challenge, but courses like “Speaking Confidently and Effectively” and “How to Speak with Effortless Confidence” completely shifted my approach to public speaking and communication. I learned strategies that boosted my confidence for job interviews, class presentations, and networking events.
It’s amazing how much easier it is to connect with others when you feel confident in your communication skills!
- ENHANCING MY DIGITAL SKILLS: Proficiency in tools like Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, etc., is essential to survive in the digital world. “Learning Microsoft 365” and “Learning Excel Online” really stood out for me, enhancing my digital skills and helping me ace my skill assessment exam. Thanks to this course, I secured an on-campus job as a Student Data and Program Assistant!
- EFFECTIVE EMAIL COMMUNICATION: The “Outlook Quick Tips” course guides you on communicating professionally via email. In today’s digital world, most tasks take place digitally, and mastering professional communication is important. This skill can make a significant difference in how you are perceived professionally. Imagine the time you can save by reducing misunderstandings!
The Sense of Achievement
One of LinkedIn Learning's most unique features is the ability to earn digital certificates upon completing courses. These certificates are a great way to demonstrate your commitment to continuous learning and can be easily added to your LinkedIn profile or resume, helping you stand out and showcase your expertise. How exciting is this!!
