Finding My Voice: Kapish Chhabra’s Transformation at Columbia College

DSC03220

When Kapish Chhabra came to Columbia College from India, he was an introverted student eager to explore new opportunities. Pursuing an associate degree in General Science with a major in Biochemistry and a minor in Psychology, he wanted more than just academic success. As he nears the end of his studies, his journey is a powerful example of how embracing life at Columbia College can transform an individual.

Kapish's decision to study in Canada was driven by his goal of entering the healthcare field. Initially interested in nursing, he chose Columbia College as a stepping stone. "I needed a bridge to prepare me before diving straight into university," he shares. "Columbia College offered the perfect environment with small classes and supportive instructors."

Like many international students, Kapish faced challenges adapting to a new education system, a new country, and making friends. He candidly shares, "I struggled at first, especially with unfamiliar academic expectations and making new connections." However, he didn't let these obstacles stop him. He regularly attended office hours, used the Learning Centre, and joined school clubs like the Dragon Boat team. "I wanted to feel connected, so I joined the Dragon Boat team," he explains. This led him to volunteer for various events and participate in the College's Community Connections program. "I started as an introvert, but now I'm much more outgoing. The community at Columbia College helped me grow."

One of his most memorable experiences was working with the Vancouver Food Justice Coalition. "Contributing to the Community Connections program and addressing food insecurity among international students was incredibly rewarding," Kapish reflects. This role allowed him to give back and provided a platform to represent his classmates.

Kapish's active involvement at Columbia College is a testament to his commitment to personal and professional growth. From working as a Student Engagement Ambassador to advocating for food security through the Community Connections program, he took every opportunity to engage with the College community. "Being involved has been one of the best parts of my College experience," he says. "It's helped me build confidence and connections that will benefit me in the future."

As Kapish nears the end of his Columbia College studies, his plans are clear. He intends to continue his education in healthcare, starting with courses at BCIT before pursuing a nursing degree. "I'm excited about the future and making a difference through a career in nursing," he says enthusiastically.

Kapish's journey offers valuable advice for future international students: "Embrace every opportunity that comes your way. Don't be shy—step out of your comfort zone and connect with new people. Utilize all the resources available at Columbia College from day one. They're here to help you succeed!"

Kapish Chhabra's story is a strong example of how engaging with the College community can transform a student's experience. His journey from a shy student to a confident community leader exemplifies how Columbia College helps students thrive.
