Fundraising

In 2019, Columbia College raised a total of $637.75 for cancer research!

This year, our goal is $400. As much as we would love to surpass our 2019 achievement, we recognize that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about financial struggles for many people.

We will have a variety of fundraising activities throughout the Fall 2021 semester. There will be one each month in September, October and November. Proceeds will be sent to the Terry Fox Foundation in December.

Volunteers are wanted to help with these activities. It’s an opportunity to gain experience in event planning and fundraising!

Please email Student Life Coordinator, Zerlinda if you are interested.

Who is Terry Fox? What is the Terry Fox Run? What is the Marathon of Hope?

Terry Fox is a Canadian hero. He’s kind of like Nelson Mandela or David Suzuki. We are not celebrating him, we are continuing the cause he started. Just like those who started fighting for human rights or fighting to protect the environment, Terry Fox started fighting for a world without cancer.

Terry Fox was someone just like you. He was a student. He had been accepted into SFU. He was going to play basketball on the school team.

Terry was 18 years old when he was diagnosed with cancer. He lost his right leg.

After his personal experience in the cancer wards, Terry realized that more money was needed for cancer research. He thought just $1 per person could make a huge difference.

On April 12, he dipped his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean, turned around and started running. He would run a full marathon every single day, about 42km (26 miles). He called it the Marathon of Hope.

He wanted people to see him, ask why, learn about the need for cancer research and donate to the cause.

This set in motion the framework for the Terry Fox Run.

Columbia College’s school run will be one of over 9,000 runs across Canada!
